One of the advantages of using a faceplate ring is that you can fasten it to a bowl blank for rough shaping and drying. Better still, leaving the ring attached to the rough-turned bowl makes re-chucking after drying quick for final shaping and finishing. A faceplate ring also offers flexibility by allowing you to take work on and off the lathe as needed without loss of concentricity.
